Ditch the Gym! 6 Inexpensive Ways to Stay in Shape

Eliminating non-essentials are one of the easiest ways to save some serious dough. A gym membership, for instance, can rack up hundreds to thousands of dollars per year! Fees for basic gym access can cost you anywhere from $15 to $45 per month, while luxury and specialty gyms can reach up $200 per month, or $2,400 per year!! That’s a LOT of pocket change.

If you’re currently paying monthly membership fees, it might be time to cut the cord. Here are some cheap and free alternatives to staying fit.

1. Take a hike: $0 - 5

Go outside and explore! Plan a hiking trip with some friends and discover your love for all things nature. Find a new trail or visit your favorite spot. Some parks may have a small entrance fee, but most are free! Plus, nothing beats a breath of fresh air on a cool Sunday afternoon.

2. Go for a run: FREE

Throw on a pair of trainers and you’re good to go. Take a few laps around your block or run at your local park to get your heart pumping! Running is a great form of exercise and can clear your mind from stress and anxiety. Best part of all? It’s completely free.

3. Go for bike ride: FREE

Love spin class? If you own a bike, ditch the stationary one and hit the streets instead. Bike around town and see your city from a new perspective. Plus, you’ll save money on transportation, which is s a win-win.

4. Swim at a public pool: $0 - $5

Prefer a low-impact activity? Swimming is a great alternative for people with knee injuries or bad joints. Get your cardio in while building lung strength and lean muscle from a few laps around the pool. Don’t have a pool? Get a day pass at public pools for free or at a small fee.

5. Workout at home: $0

The internet is amazing. Stream free workout videos and tutorials on YouTube and follow along from the comforts of your own home! Get the same results without driving to the gym. Or create your own workout plan. Simple exercises like burpees, push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, and planks require no equipment and are extremely effective.

6. Pay for one class at a time: $10 - 20

Unlimited access to group fitness may sound like a great bargain, but unless you’re taking a spin or yoga class every other day, it may be an unnecessary commitment. If you don’t attend these classes often, perhaps it may be wise to cancel your membership and pay for classes individually. You’ll value the class a lot more and are more likely to give it your all!
